Frozen Pipes? Tips from PWSA

Pittsburgh, Pa – The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) is ready to respond to water and sewer emergencies during extreme freezing temperatures. Tom Palmosina, Director of Operations says, “PWSA crews and contractors are ready to respond to the anticipated increase in weather related issues. We are adding extra crews around the clock. We are asking residents to call PWSA Dispatch for water and sewer emergencies.”

PWSA Dispatch continues to handle a large volume of calls related to frozen meters and internal plumbing problems.

  • PWSA reminds customers to protect unheated areas.  Open cabinets under the sink exposing pipes to warm air.

  • If customers experience frozen pipes inside their home they should locate and shut the main/meter valve and call a plumber immediately.

  • If customers need assistance locating or shutting their main/meter valve, please call PWSA Dispatch 24/7 at 412-255-2429 or 412-255-2409.  A PWSA plumber will shut the water at the curb.

The extended forecast is predicting that sub-zero temperatures may extend through the end of the month.  PWSA encourages customers to be mindful of their internal plumbing.

In the event of a water or sewer emergency, residents are asked to call PWSA Emergency Dispatch 24/7 at (412) 255-2429 or (412) 255-2409.
